PROMPT:   Forgive someone you think you will never forgive in a scene in which all the names are different and the circumstances are so unique no one will ever know it is the hardest thing you've ever done.

Kirk Lynn, playwright/educator
Dan, 60, glares at this wife, Betty, 60.
DAN
What the fuck, Betty?  What the fuck?
BETTY
Don’t take that tone with me, asshole!
DAN
Carpet!  Why now?  Why couldn’t it wait!?
BETTY
It was so disgusting, I couldn’t even  turn the light on in the hall.  I felt like... like trailer trash.
DAN
But it couldn’t wait til the end of the summer?
BETTY
No. It couldn’t.
DAN
I’m trying to write a play.
BETTY
You’re always writing... something.
DAN
That’s what I do.  I’m an artist.
BETTY
Artist... pssh.
DAN
You got a slow leak?
BETTY
I don’t know why I ever married you.
DAN
We both know why you married me.
BETTY
(smirking)
Oh yea... Well, and you can cook... and you’re so fucking weird.  But an artist?!
DAN
You’re just being mean.
BETTY
I thought we’d live in Hollywood.  I thought we’d be rich.
DAN
I’m not the one who misused the birth control.
BETTY
It was an accident!
DAN
I know!
Silence.
BETTY
So that’s it then.
DAN
I still have to get the beds back in.
BETTY
I’ll help.
DAN
I got it.  You rest.
BETTY
Thanks, hon.
They kiss.
DAN
I love you.
BETTY
I love you too.
End of play.
