29 June 2015 "Isn't there a song with that title"

PROMPT:  Write a scene for the two individuals in this image:

Marisela Treviño Orta, playwright

William stands on stage looking up.  Mabel is never seen, but we hear her voice.
WILLIAM
Mabel, come down from there.
MABEL
Come down from where?
WILLIAM
The top of the tree.  It’s dangerous.  You’ll fall!
MABEL
I’m not in the top of the tree.
WILLIAM
What do you mean you’re not in the tree?!
William’s head turns to follow a slowly drifting Mabel high overhead.
WILLIAM
Mabel?!  Why aren’t you in the tree!?
MABEL
I can hear the highway breathing.
WILLIAM
Mabel?!  Highways don’t breathe.
MABEL
I can hear it breathing.
WILLIAM
Mabel?  Stop talking like that!  Get down here!
MABEL
Am I dreaming?
WILLIAM
No!  You’re... you’re floating!
MABEL
Am I?  I am!... The world is... moving!
WILLIAM
The world’s not moving.  You’re moving!  Come back here!
MABEL
I’m... I’m so happy.
WILLIAM
Mabel!  Put your dress back on!
A flowery summer dress floats down and covers William’s head.
Moments later, a bra and panties float down.
WILLIAM
Mabel?!  You’re naked!
MABEL
As the day God made me!
Silence.  William reaches up.
WILLIAM
(forlorned)
Mabel.
MABEL
Goodbye, William.  I’m joining the world of missing persons.
WILLIAM
(softly, sadly)
Mabel...
William watches as she drifts out of sight.
End of play.
