ScriptWorks 30/60/90 - 31 July 2013

I joined a month long writing program with ScriptWorks, a playwrights organization in Austin, called 30/60/90.  Everyday, starting back on 31 July, I get a writing prompt to respond to.  I thought I would post what I wrote on my blog.

Prompt from 31 July:

A reunion of characters who have not seen each other in at least 25 years.
-Megan Monaghan Rivas, director/dramaturg/educator

My response:

An empty stage.
AARON, 25, female, cute, Hispanic, enters timidly.  She looks around.
BOBBY, 25, cute, male, Hispanic enters.  He looks around.  Notices Aaron, but doesn’t approach.  They stand silently for a few seconds, then look over at one another.  Head nods.  Aaron gets restless and looks around again.  When she gets to Bobby, she hesitates a moment and then approaches.

AARON
Hey.

BOBBY
Hey.

Silence.  They stand a little ways apart.

AARON
I’m waitin’ for somebody.

BOBBY
Yea?  Me, too.

AARON
Yea?  Who ya waitin’ for?

BOBBY
My brother.

AARON
Yea?  That’s weird.

Silence.
Bobby shuffles and looks at Aaron.

BOBBY
Why is that weird?

AARON
I’m waitin’ for my sister.

BOBBY
That is weird.

Silence.

AARON
Weird.

Silence.

BOBBY
What’s your sister look like?

AARON
Like me I guess.

BOBBY
You guess?

AARON
Yea.  We’ve never met.

BOBBY
You’ve never met your sister?

AARON
Nope.

BOBBY
Weird.

Silence.

AARON
What’s your brother look like?

BOBBY
Like me, I guess.

AARON
You’ve never met your brother?!

BOBBY
Nope.

AARON
Weirder and weirder.

Silence.

BOBBY
Why do you think your sister looks like you?

AARON
We’re twins.

BOBBY
You’re kidding?

AARON
Why would I kid?

BOBBY
Because my brother and I are twins.

AARON
That’s spooky.

BOBBY
Yea.  Weird.

Silence.  They shuffle.

AARON
I’ve been hear awhile.

BOBBY
Yea, me too.

AARON
I’m startin’ to think, she’s not gonna show up.

BOBBY
I’m thinkin’ the same thing.

Silence.  Aaron shrugs.

AARON
I guess she’s not comin’.

BOBBY
My brother neither.

Aaron turns to leave.

AARON
See ya around.

Bobby turns to leave in the opposite direction.

BOBBY
Yea.  See ya.

They leave on opposite sides of the stage.

Curtain.
